SPArKS NEW EXCO FOR 2016-2018

4 April 2016 - The Society of Performing Arts Kota Kinabalu Sabah (SPArKS) held their bienniel meeting on the 31st of March at Palace Hotel. During the meeting, the current executive committee was dissolved to make way for a team leading the 2016-2018 term.

Members of SPArKS then unanimously elected seven people to the new term as its executive committee.

Retaining his post as president for another term is Sabah's master acoustic guitarist Roger Wang. Also retaining the vice president position is events expert Arthur E. Lee. The new secretary is Eilvane Chieng as May Ng retains her post as treasurer.

The three committee members are Emmanuel Chee, Chris Pereira and theater leader Susan Bansin.

In his speech as incoming president, Wang said that the association’s primary signature activity is the yearly held Kota Kinabalu Arts Festival which is a two months long event that includes events such as the KK Jazz Festival, the KK International Film Festival and many more.

“SPArKS will continue to support the advancement of the performing arts in Kota Kinabalu as well as statewide. The KK Arts Festival will be held in June and July this year with activities happening almost every week,” he elaborated.

At the bienniel meeting, Wang gave his report for his first term as president, outlining the events supported by the association from 2014-2016. Amongst them were the Kota Kinabalu Arts Fest (2014 and 2015), the Kota Kinabalu Jazz Fest (2014 and 2015) and the Kota Kinabalu International Film Festival (2014 and 2015).

He also highlighted the music competition SPArKS supported: UNPLUGGED Acoustic Competition 4.

“We see that these events play an important role in promoting and developing local talents, thus sharing the same vision as SPArKS,” he said.

Vice president, Lee, said that SPArKS had the opportunity to work with the American Embassy in 2014 and 2015, bringing several Internationally known artists and individuals to perform at concerts including the likes of Guns N Roses guitarist, Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal which had 1,000 in attendance.
